I love found beauty in everyday, mass-produced items, especially when presented in the way that they are in a new book by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of british design firm Industrial Facility. Especially interesting pieces to note are the penknife-scissors ( or scissors-penknife, depending on which you use first) from Japan, where the apparent danger of using the Frankenstein tool outweighs its space-saving merits and the “Two-headed nail” which, by simply duplicating the nail head, create a new product that is easy to remove after serving its temporary purpose.

Read MoreI’ve always wondered what the LFs and OTFs behind font names mean, so I am sure there are lots more confused souls like me out there. Fontfeed has a great article about just that, and explains in clear graphical terms what each name means for the fonts, and for you. A must read for any designer!

LBN has some super work up at their site, but the one I like the most is their design for The Playground Magazine.

Typography legend John D Berry’s dot-font is now available to download for free! It’s a collection of essays on design, both graphic and otherwise, published in paper-space by Mark Batty Publisher in 2006. “We all live in the midst of design every day; we might as well pay attention to it, and turn an observant and critical eye on what’s around us.” Download it here.

‘Evolving from graffiti and street art, urban interventions are the next generation of artwork to hit public space. Using any and all of the components that make up urban landscapes, these mostly spatial works bring art to the masses. They turn the street into a studio, laboratory, club, and gallery and challenge us to rediscover our environment and interact with it in new ways. This is the first book to document these very current, personal art projects in a comprehensive way. It shows the growing connections and interplay of this scene with art, architecture, performance, and installation as it turns public spaces into surprising and provoking individual experiences.’ via Gestalten

“Self-built, informal settlements on the roofs of high-rise buildings are an integral part of Hong Kong’s urban landscape. The rise of rooftop communities is closely linked to the migration history from Chinese Mainland to Hong Kong. With each of China’s tumultuous political movements in the 20th century, like the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, there was a corresponding wave of Mainland Chinese migrating to Hong Kong.”
